Il Botolo is so proud to be amongst the outstanding Italian winemakers that shone at this year’s Decanter World Wine Awards!
For the third year in a row, our Nizza DOCG picked up a silver medal (90 points), this time for the 2016 vintage, while our Barbera d’Asti Superiore DOCG 2016 was awarded a bronze medal (89 points).
Here are Decanter’s tasting notes for our award winning Nizza DOCG 2016:
“Toasted nose and pretty palate, with supple, concentrated black cherry fruit and creamy, textured mouthfeel. Notes of oak, bacon and kirsch.”
The Decanter World Wine Awards is an international wine competition established and managed by Britain’s prestigious Decanter wine magazine. Founded in 2004, the London-based competition now receives entries from over 47 countries worldwide and in 2014 received over 15,000 entries, making it the largest wine competition in the world.
Over the two weeks of tasting, chaired by Steven Spurrier, the DWWA 2019 brings together 280 of the world’s top wine experts, including 66 Masters of Wine and Master Sommeliers, who blind tasted close to 17,000 wines. This culminated in 50 Best in Show medals, 148 Platinum, 480 Gold, 4,164 Silver and 7,376 Bronze medals being given out.
The results of the competition are published online and in print in Decanter’s August Edition, which is released in July.
Annual Nizza Producers’ Association Blind Tasting
The annual blind Nizza tasting organized by the Association of Nizza Producers was held at the Enotecnica in Nizza Monferrato on May 21 2019.
More than 75 examples of Nizza, representing the 60 Nizza producers, were blind tasted by the producers themselves. All samples were unreleased and will be bottled in 2019. Scorecards were used to judge for appearance, aroma and taste. Each of the three characteristics was given one of the following scores “Fair, Good, Excellent, Inadequate”.
Il Botolo submitted its 2017 unreleased vintage, with samples being drawn from the barrique and we were thrilled to receive an overall panel score of “Excellent” for all three characteristics judged: appearance, aroma and taste.
